"In loving memory" is the phrase most families reach for on a sign, a card or a post. What comes after it is harder. This page has wording you can copy: the classic layouts, short lines that fit a sign, verses that are free to print, and words for announcing a death or a service online. Everything here is free to use.

The classic layouts
Most signs and cards use one of these, with the name in the largest type.
In loving memory of
Eleanor Rose Whitfield
1941 – 2026Celebrating the life of
Walter James Whitfield
March 2, 1947 – October 3, 2026Forever in our hearts
Dorothy Mae Whitfield
1938 – 2026
Other openings that work: "In memory of", "Remembering", "Always loved, never forgotten", "A life well lived" and "Forever loved". If everyone knew them by another name, use it: "Eleanor 'Ellie' Whitfield".
Short lines to go under the name
One line is plenty on a sign. Keep it under about ten words so it reads from across the room.
- Always loved, never forgotten.
- Forever in our hearts.
- Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
- Loved beyond words, missed beyond measure.
- Thank you for the memories.
- Until we meet again.
Lines from poems and scripture that are free to print:
- "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die." Thomas Campbell, 1825
- "Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room." Henry Scott Holland, 1910
- "Home is the sailor, home from sea, and the hunter home from the hill." Robert Louis Stevenson, 1887
- "We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind." William Wordsworth, 1807
- "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4
- "In my Father's house are many mansions: I go to prepare a place for you." John 14:2
More poems and verses, with notes on what fits where, are on our poems and verses page.
For a memorial table or a guest book
Small signs on a table help guests know what to do, so the family does not have to explain.
- "Please take a card in loving memory of Eleanor."
- "Share a memory of Walt. Write a note and leave it in the box; we will keep them all for the family."
- "These photos are from Dorothy's albums. Please take your time."
- "Please sign the book and tell us how you knew Eleanor."
- "Light a candle in loving memory of Walt."
Announcing a death online
A short post reaches people fastest. Say who has died, when, and where to find the service details. You do not need to say how they died.

Anniversaries and remembrance
One year ago today we said goodbye to Mum. We miss her every day, and we see her in the garden she planted. In loving memory of Eleanor Rose Whitfield, 1941 – 2026.
Remembering Dad on his birthday today. Happy birthday, Walt. We still tell your jokes.
A sign people can read
- Make the name the biggest thing on the sign, then the dates, then one short line. Leave everything else to the program.
- Choose a photo where their face is clear and fills the frame. A close photo reads from across a room; a wide group photo does not.
- Dark letters on a light background are the easiest to read, for everyone.
- Read every name and date aloud to a second person before you print.
- Our welcome signs come in 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 inches, two poster sizes that many print shops print the same day.
